Malus 'Royalty' (Crab Apple)
Garden Centre > Plants > Trees & Hedging
Position: full sun or partial shade
Soil: fertile, well-drained soil
Rate of growth: average
Flowering period: April and May
Hardiness: fully hardy
Dramatic, dark red-purple leaves turn fiery red in late autumn. In late spring, clusters of large, crimson flowers contrast wonderfully with the foliage, and are followed by glossy, dark red fruit, which turn black when ripe and are irresistible to birds. This spreading, purple-leaved crab apple makes a magnificent tree for a small, sunny garden. Pollution tolerant, it's particularly suitable for urban sites. Garden care: When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake firmly. Remove dead, diseased and crossing branches while the tree is dormant.
