Grows widely in marshy conditions in mountain meadows in North West U.S.A where it was an important plant and food source for native Indians. An excellent subject for a damp semi-shady spot where it will positively thrive so much so that you will need to lift and divide the clump every 4 to 5 years. The graceful erect spikes of vivid blue flowers are spectacular en-masse especially naturalized in grass.
