Thankyou Hywel, lol...I think there was lots of potential for improvement!
SBG yes my first attempts were indeed Virginia stock. I had a small patch at the end of the path, in front of the fence but that must have been later than the photo. Later (must have been quite a lot later!)I grew some dahlia seeds and managed to keep one yellow one over the winter for several years.
Sandra I had no idea this photo existed until my sister sent it to me as a birthday card!

Lovely photo, Sue! Fond memories of your childhood I’ll bet! Starting early with an interest in gardening. I have to admit I was a bit older when I got into gardening. My maternal grandfather or Papa as we called him had a fantastic back and front garden. It really evokes the memory doesn’t it!

That is just priceless, you couldn`t have had a nicer Birthday card. I can see that with two hands on that little spade shows a serious gardener in the making.

awh isn't she a cutie. I assume that is you Sue. Bet you wish you still had your little spade.
can you remember what you first grew?
Mine was Virginia stock down a 12" strip between the drive and the front path.
