Winter gardening

The weather was finally nice enough to go out and do something over the last 2 days. I’ve pruned some thick branches off the apple tree and cut out about 6 long branches from the Mahonia ‘Charity’, it gets too tall but responds well to pruning, the wood is the most amazing bright yellow colour! The Clematis sieboldii in a pot has inch long shoots and there are snowdrops in the front garden. The hellebores are beginning to flower, I have a pure white oriental type that lights up the borders. I must take the camera out and photograph them. The chickens are much happier now that the freezing weather has gone, they must have had very cold little feet! Still laying eggs though so it’s not all bad. Plant of the moment has to be Sarcococca, the scent is incredible and the plant is so easy to grow, much less trouble on clay than the Daphnes that have died on me. I recommend it to anyone. The scent travels for quite a way but the flowers are just white tassels and you need to search for what is producing it. I shall buy a different sort for nearer the kitchen door. The chickens don’t eat it either so that’s a bonus.
