Busy Lizzies close up on balcony

One of the many photos I took of the Busy Lizzies flowering in wall pouches on my balcony during the summer of 2009.

Wishing you much success again this year, despite the long, freezing winter. :-)

They look a treat Balcony........

Thank you one & all. They do look good, don't they? I find that these modern forms of Busy Lizzie are fantastic for the balcony, they will put up with anything the the British weather will throw at them & come back smiling plus they start to flower from very small plants. They are a flower I've always loved right from back when I was only 15 or 16 & started growing them on the windowsill of our living room. Back then there was only one colour - the ubiquitous pink!

Yes I remember it well Balc...it was my first house plant...Lol watery stems and a bright pink flower that dropped everywhere...my sister had a cutting from it which lasted until last year!

They used to suffer from heavy infestations of red spider mite & be covered in fine spider silk as well! yet even so very few plants actually died. Just last year I saw them on sale again in Tesco! I couldn't believe my eyes & had to get up close for a really good look at them.

lovely pic Balcony I will try and propagate mine now :-)

They are the easiest thing possible to propagate - just cut a stem stick it in some water & hey presto within a couple of weeks new plants!!! (weeds!) You don't even have to prepare them like other cuttings, just make a clean cut anywhere as they root all along the stem, they have no preference for rooting at nodes.

While I was writing the above Coleus came into my mind & everything I've said above about Busy Lizzies or Impatiens applies to Coleus as well!

Thanks for the tips Balcony I'll try that with the Busy Lizzy :-)
