Decided to use water retension matting on my greenhouse staging. At present i have plastic trays (42 by 20ins) on the staging and the matting i am cutting to that size will be on top of plastic sheeting. Would welcome any advice regarding its use . take care enjoy Tony

I have tried pots on trays of fine gravel which you keep moist and that was successful so I suppose the water matting will give the same result.

Hi Rose At present GH a bit cluttered with patio chairs ect but i have my cuttings under fleece on staging . Am waiting to clear said furniture out and get the matting down on my plastic staging covers. I have enough for a tray 42by20 tray but its an experiment at the moment. i have 3 such trays on my staging at the moment. Thankyou for fine gravel idea Rose i must try that also. To cold at moment to tidy up but GH has been disinfected . take care Rose Tony

I'm lucky Tony as I have an electric heater in mine so can start growing now . I already have toms. germinating on the kitchen windowsill in my electric progater and this is worth its weight in gold.Everthing germinates so much quicker.

hi Rose Blimey my good lady will not have plants in the house . I went down on one knee and supplied a box of black majic to get my small propagator in the rear box room. If you think that was bad she did,nt give me one either(LoL). No heat in Gh yet but i am considering it. Nice to have seeds germinating at this time of year though. Take care Tony

Hi! I haven't tried it either, Tony, but I would imagine it would be good to keep a general humidity around the tray. Are you just going to water the trays from below, or are you going to use it as a covered up propagater type thingy?

Whats a "thingy" Elizabeth? When I did this I just watered from below, but sometimes I found that the plants weren't always getting enough water, so I defeated the object,by watering from the top occassionally ,so now have gone back to the basic method and watering them when needed. Perhaps it should have been a much bigger box of chocs plus any other treat to persuade her, Tony.A greenhouse heater doesn't make alot of difference to our heating bills , so it might be worth investing in one. Its also nice to be in a warm greenhouse this time of year.

Hi Elizabeth I am Toying with the idea of putting gravel in a small propagator tray and use that as a bottom moisture source. Thankyou Rose for idea. My theory is that roots hunt vigorously for water and in so doing become part of a stronger plant. Trouble is roots can indeed rot and rot can produce infection so i think a little water now and again is a good basis for growth. A bottom damp source does it but as Rose says from the top watering occasionally helps. Rose ,please you know a thingy is a wotsit blooming heck every one knows that. Take care Tony.

Hi Rose Yes we may never be able to get him out . I have a cunning plan though. The plank and a whack on his behind may dislodge the trusty beast. Its a challenge for my number two to accept. Now,now Rose its your Donkey(LoL). Take care Rose will be back on line in about two wks after tonight. Enjoy Tony
