Chumping and Free Compost

Allotgirl has been wondering about Bonfire Night. Could our liuttle plot be a venue for a Bonfire Night party? Would Allotman allow it? If it’s a yes- then Allotgirl could go chumping. Does anyone else out there chump?
If you are from Yorkshire you may know what I’m talking about. If not- have a guess.
Plus- Allotgirl has a dilemma. The local council is giving away a free carload of compost on Saturday. Allotgirl is willing but may not be able, as her hands have seized up! What’s a girl to do? Will Allotman be back from his jolidays in time to collect the lovely brown stuff? Could Allotgirl find some willing muscle in time? Watch this space!

Read a very good explanation here http://www.openwriting.com/archives/2006/10/chumping.php Basically it is collecting fallen wood for a bonfire.

Its collecting wood etc for the bonfire goes on for sometime and ends on the Nov 5th when its lit. Trouble is you have to hide it, as it often gets pinched for someone elses.

Chumping- correct! Collecting firewood for the bonfire! Well Done moon grower! Also will have to have a good poke around in the pile before to make sure that there are no hedgehogs inside it! As for folk stealing it- they wouldn't dare steal from Allotgirl or she would pursue them with her deadly superpowers!

Ive been chumping my dad was from Yorkshire (I lived there till I was 5) and we did it all my childhood every October/November to get ready for the 5th. Here in East Sussex we have several huge parades for bonfire night my village has one of them, full of people dressed up with lanterns under their long clothes and cannon fire and drums for three hours leading up to the bonfire and fireworks. This takes place around the lewis area for several weeks and they raise funds for it all year.
