sticky bands around fruit trees

I have just been sticking bands around the fruit trees in my garden. I am not sure whether I have done this correctly. Is the sticky supposed to be against the tree or with the sticky on the outside. It sounds like a silly question but I have to ask?

Why do they bother climbing the tree when they can fly sraight in?

The females are flightless - they crawl up to meet the males who fly in. You want to stop that as the caterpillars will eat the leaves and fruit.

Outside - you want to catch the female moths from climbing up the fruit trees - otherwise they will lay eggs and the caterpillars will eat the new leaves and the fruit.
