Fantastic day!!

I felt I needed to share my excitement with my fellow gardening chums as I have had a very fruitful day today. Apart from the sun was shining and I could get out in the garden, I harvested some of my 1st early potatoes (Pentlan Javlin) and ate them for tea Mmmmmm, along with the radishes I gathered yesterday. Its on days like this that all the hard work pays off!!!! I didn’t stop there I also lifted my garlic which I planted out late October of last year, so all in all Iv’e had a fab day! I know it’s early for lifting the garlic but they were ready, it must be down to the crazy weather!! Hopefully You will be able see the fruits of my labour as I have uploaded a few piccys for you to look at. Happy gardening days to you all.

That looks tasty Avid Gardener, can't wait to dig up my Charlottes soon! Nothing tastes better than just-dug-up tatties.

Whoohoo! Avid, what a haul! It looks like a harvest from early autumn! That garlic looks great!...I'm sure I can smell it from here! Are you going to plait them all together like the French do? I used to do that for my Mum, it was too fiddly for her to do. Yummy looking spuds too, well done, you'll eat like kings!

Your garlic looks fantastic , when can I come for tea!

Nice harvest you've got there, makes me want an allotment and grow all that lovely veg myself. But I think it's a little bit late for me besides allotments are not easy to come by. Unfortunately my garden is not big enough. I know you're saying get some pots, but been unlucky with veg in pots. I do have runner beans and carrots growing, so I am looking forward to cook those. You've done well!

Blimey your tatties are early! When did you plant then? Mine haven't even flowered yet, but are looking so healthy which I'm pleased about as it's my first attempt at homegrowns!
Bet they taste delicious with a wee knob of butter mmmmm

I will try and answer all your questions and hopefully not miss anyone out....Here goes...
Firstly Libet, I usually plait my garlic and hang them up in the greenhouse to dry but the tops have withered away too much this year to do that so I have cleaned them up and cut the stems and stored them in some old mushroom crates.
Secondly Sandra are you talking about harvesting Pots or Garlic?
Thirdly Gingin, your welcome any time for tea, but the garlics a bit green at the moment so could cause a few tummy upsets!!!!!
Fourthly Titchy, work with what you have got and keep on gardening, I wouldn't suggest potted veggies as they take too much looking after!
And last but not least Donnaj1dh I planted my pots on the 9th March 2011 and my first earlies (the ones I have started to harvest) haven't flowered either, buts that is not unusual for first earlies. My second earlies (Kestrel) have just started to flower.
Hope that helps everyone.

I didn't plant mine until early april (being in NE Scotland and still frosts about). I planted Roosters so I've no idea when they'll likely crop.

Donnaj1dh' We too are prone to late frost here in Derbyshire, When sowing my pots I dig a 4inches trench, put a nice mattress of horse manure for the seed pots to bed down onto and them cover them in soil and earth them up about 3inches immediately, When they poke their heads through the top I try to recover, but if all else fails and we know the temp is going to drop I put fleece over them. I had a scare this year when the plants were about 10 - 12 inches high, got up to use the bath room around 4.45am to discover an unforecasted frost!!!!! I couldn't get back to sleep, I knew that if I could get water on them before the sun got onto the plants I would be alright. It was all about timing' not too early so that ice forms on them, but before the sun gets to them'! There I was in my nightie and dressing gown, hose pipe gun to the ready from 5.15am until 6.25am when the sun just started to rise onto my veg plot, the hose burst into action and guess what... it saved the day it really did work no damage was done. I know you think I'm mad but I did'nt know the sunrise time!!!
Roosters' are an early main crop pot, so you could be looking at late August to early Sept? good luck
