We have just been out and watered the garden, eveything is very dry and we are forecast a rian but only for about an hour.

Has any one ever grown a tree lily. I have had 2 tried at growing them, both failed. I was thinking of growing 3 bulbs in a very large pot that I could leave inbetween plants in the border. I love lilies, we have one lot in a pot and another in the front garden. I would love to have another shot at growing them, if it does not work this time I will give up.

The ground is so hard its almost impossible to plant into it, so I have the plants still on their pots where I hope eventually to get them in. We could do with digging 6ft down and replacing the clay with either compost or top soil.

If I treat the clay it would cost hundreds of pounds and be rather difficult now the border is almost full. The horse manure that was spread on the garden last autumn has all disappeared but does not seem to have helped the problem particularly. When I can dig, I dig a hole and plant into compost, break up as much of the clay as I can and spread it over where I have planted. At least the plants have a chance then.

This clematis is on the fence between us and our neighbour, the wire fencing allows me to train it along. I have 2 more clematis in the front which I will do the same with, they have only been put in this year, so I will start to train them next year.

Its amazing how plants can grow roots through rock hard soil - always impresses me.

I also failed to get tree lilies any taller than 4 feet. They need to be planted 10-12" deep according to this link,
http://www.ehow.co.uk/how_6977371_plant-lily-tree-bulbs.html. Your clematis is a lovely shade of pink.
