To introduce a young person (aged 46) to allotment

gardening – it took ages to devise the best procedure, because everyone wants their own ‘patch’ and the independence of experimentation. I dont expect him to help me, or be instructed by me.
I have plenty of land so have allocated a small area, with some Rhubarb at the end. Thats his.
The water butt is his. He brings his own tools in the car.
I have all the seed potatoes, onion sets, plants organised.
So am going to measure the area, calculate the exact number of chitted seed potatoes for each row, and put that number of each variety in a small cardboard box.
Told him to find white plastic strips for row markers, get a Sharpie pen, fix up a garden line the right length.
Then if this is successful this year, he can have the same size plot opposite.
That way he learns crop rotation, Potato varieties, pest control in a mini fashion.
Gardening is a complicated subject, which football devotees are not keen to master. I am thinking this is a good way to catch ’em which fits in with Football commitments (he is Vice Chairman) – they run 4 teams. He will learn the value of an allotment and garden centres, in small stages. Maybe even learn to love plants !

I'd like to think football and gardening can live together.I'm gardening and football fanatic.Have a small veg patch and large herbaceous borders but also go to every game home and away to watch my local team! Grays Athletic. In fact, I'm also the matchday announcer for home games! I think the two can be combined!!! good luck!

Diane - I take it he's introducing you to football, gradually, just the first half? And will let you watch the second half as well next year when you've go the hang of the offside rule?

Ha ha. The trouble is I go to sleep with boredom at half
time. I am not much good at spectator sports. Have to be in there taking part.

It will do him good to have an alotment Diane.
I'm like you - hopeless as a spectator. I get bored watching other people playing a game.
