I am pleased to report my Basil and Parsnip seed

are germinating in the kitchen. I strongly object to paying
£1.80 a lb for Parsnips in supermarkets. If you have a corner of land, use it to grow some at home.
Will leave them alone for a couple of weeks, then place outside to get the rainwater and harden off ready to
carefully transplant into the garden in April.

Will next sow my Tomato Seed in a shallow pot, same way
with the polythene cover to keep it damp.
We have had a mild winter. A good idea to think about it
when sowing seeds to get them growing firmly before
Spring.

Am using Levington Multipurpose compost which includes
John Innes, sieved to remove the thick bits.

Didn't realise you could successfully transplant parsnips Diane.

I love parsnips but they are a long season crop.

Years ago I knew an allotment steward who always sowed his Parsnips in mid-summer !

How I will do it Stera, is with tender, loving care. When it has rained, and the ground is damp. They say you cant
transplant Beetroot seedlings or they will bolt, but I have done it successfully. A nice little lump of soil round each
seedling, and they never know they were anywhere else.

That's exactly what I do Dianebulley. It also works for carrots and beets. I use a table spoon to gently lift up the seedling with a ball off soil surrounding it, then transplant the whole thing into a new hole.

I might have ago a parsnips in our veggie plot this year. I quite enjoy a nice fresh parsnip with the Sunday Roast -I like to bake them in the oven covered in a little honey and sesame seeds... Delicious... ;o)

If you plant them now, they should be ready to harvest by January. A couple frosts are required to make them sweet & delicious.

I do love buttered roast parsnips - maybe will give it a go this year then!
