Using plastic bags wisely and well.

Last Autumn (or Larst Back End as my Dad would say)
having a glut of recycled compost(fortified with Fish, Blood and Bone + Horticultural Sand) I bagged a lot up in
Sainsburys Bags, and stored under my greenhouse staging.
Not quite sure what to do with them.

This week with my Early Potatoes almost coming into leaf
in their 2" deep sprouting box, drastic action was needed. Frosts forecast meant the ground is still cold. And wet.

I yanked each Sainsburys bag out with the hook on my walking stick – cant bend down very well. Stuck the small hand fork in the base of each bag to make drainage holes. Set them up on the 4’ square drip trays on the staging, with the tops open. Ten bags, 20 seed potatoes.

Planted 2 seed potatoes in each one. Covered with fleece to keep them cosy. Why do we plant them in the ground ?
They need to be warm !

You're right.......planting potatoes in containers can be very succesful. I will be growing mine in bags again this year to allow me to grow lots of other (less space taking) crops in my small veg patch.
I may grow just a few in a small patch of soil behind the greenhouse (seperate from the veg patch)

That sounds like an excellent idea, Diane. Easier to harvest as well, I should think.

Plastic bags do rot eventually.
