The things we take for granted.

But I decided to have the local heating engineers in to do an estimate for new workings for my toilet cistern.
The young man assured me they only deal with a reliable firm, ’ no Chinese ’ I said.
It had been installed by the previous flat owner, I thought
25 years ago, as I have been here 17 years.
So the maths were 25 × 365 × 8 times daily . It has been flushed 73,000 times !
He said it was the right thing to do, as they do break down.
Better safe than sorry.

the cistern in my family home is still going strong and it has been in since 1956! and we were a family of 7 and apart from the replacement of washers [3 times] and a ball cock it still goes and goes.
so do be careful about paying out money. also why heating engineers? or are they also general plumbers?

They are the best heating engineers in Kettering, are always reasonably priced, also do plumbing but their trade title is important to them. Heating engineers are more highly qualified than plumbers. I have dealt with them for years. They have advised to keep the existing toilet because its part of the bathroom suite. A new one would
not be the same colour, it seems.
It will put my mind at rest having it done now.

There is also the point that water varies according to the geology of the area of the country where we live. Here we have the hardest water in the country. Kettles get furred up with limescale, which is hard to get off.
My toilet cistern is furred up in the same way.
I wouldnt want it to break down when I am ill when the heating engineers are busy with their other work and cant come for several days !
In the same way Dental Surgeons are better to deal with than ordinary Dentists. I paid privately for years to get my gums injected before drilling. When I was a child a dentist wasn not qualified to do this. It was awful.

Hi Diane, be careful you don't get ripped off, there isn't really that much to go wrong with a toilet cistern, I would have a look online at the price of a new toilet, and see how it compares with the price you've been quoted, also get quotes from 2 or 3 more plumbers, if it's working I wouldn't bother getting the fittings replaced, then if it stops working, that is the time to get a plumber in, BE CAREFUL, Derek.
