The Good Old Days.

Did anyone see the programme on BBC2 on Friday evening 7th. August. called Mud, Sweat and Tractors. I only caught it because a friend rang me to tell me about it. I flicked the TV over, but my wife said “If you think I’m watching a programme about tractors when East Enders is on, you’ve got another think coming”. An hour later she had enjoyed it as much as me. It brought back many memories of old methods never forgotten. I remember when machines started to replace the backaching job of planting. Double planting with two men, one with a spade making the holes and one putting in the plants, a method often used for planting potatoes. We planted 1,000 cabbages an hour with a dibber, 4 men planting, one boy laying out. piece work about 2 shillings an hour (10p,) grinding work but certainly got the adrenalin running.
The tomatoes we grew from Long Ashton research station, ES1’s and ES2’s all grew the size of a golf ball, total height on the hulms was 28 trusses.
Fascinating piece about lady gardeners in training.
The beautiful apple orchards at North Perrot and the song from the man who practises the art of cider making.
Brilliant programme, if you missed it go on to BBCi player and enjoy.

I would be watching Eastenders, lol. Enjoyed your Blog Bob. I remember going potato picking when I was a child - what a back breaking job that was.

Mud, Sweat and Tractors was first shown on BBC 4 television back in April, 2009, but this is the first time the series has been shown on BBC 2 TV.

Yes Bob, sitting in the trailer, behind the tractor, being taken to the field, ha ha. Those were the days, dont think I've ever ached so much though - aching today though, lots of weeding has been done though :-)

I'll have to see it on the iplayer. We don't have the same programmes here as you get in England. ( not that I bother with it much anyway ).
This sounds interesting though.

Thanks Hywel, I know sometimes programmes do vary in regions. I think you will find it interesting. I certainly did but then I'm in the right age bracket, brought back lots of memories.

Yes I watched it avidly - it was a great noastalgia trip for me remembering tractors on a norfolk farm As kids we could ride on them in those days as health and safety had yet to be invented.

Hi Bob ~
On my blog #21, each week I list all the TV shows on the main channels which might be of interest to gardeners
If any member makes a comment on that blog, then each week, that heading will come up on your home page and you can click to see what programmes are coming up. I've been including the Mud, Sweat and Tractors shows... I hope this helps.
