ceanthus in Derbyshire

I too live in Derbyshire and have a fourteen year old Ceanthus tree which was magnificent. My pride and joy.
This year it appeared to have died but like some of your other contributors I now see some new green shoots appearing so I am keeping my fingers crossed that it may still be alive. An expert from Bluebell Nursery told me to wait until June and prune all the brown off. I have also lost my two year old passion flower. Have dug this up and replaced it with something more hardy to cover a screening trellis. I have only just found this site and find it very useful. Shall put it in my “Favourites”.
Happy gardening to you all.

Welcome to GoY. I hope your tree will recover. Lots of plants have been lost this year because of the weather but if it's sprouting it should be all right

Welcome to GoY from me too Dumpygirl. I love Ceanothus too, in fact I bought one today! My favourite is "Concha" and I had a real beauty which sadly blew down in spite of being kept trimmed. I read recently that they're quite short lived so your 14 year old one is doing well. Hope it makes a good recovery.

You're right Sticki! My brother-in-law had one that he grew behind a shady hedge, it had beautiful flowers up at the top of the plant in the sun where you couldn't see them, but then it developed a baldy bottom! And that's never a good combination! They benefit too, by having a short trim after they flower, it helps keep them compact... ceanothus that is, not brothers-in-law!

Yes they're most definitely sun lovers Sticki and the spot I chose it for is sunny so should do well. I shall be able to see it while sitting in my armchair :o))
