The Garden Community for Garden Lovers

I have no clue what I'm doing...

First post and I’m already out of my depth. I have zero gardening skills and even less knowledge but with a large garden to try and control I figure I should just jump in at the deep end and see if I can’t learn something.

I’ve already hit a stumbling block when trying to add some of my plants as I don’t know what they are (not the common name OR the latin name). It’s like a trial by fire.

I’m going to get the camera out though and try to narrow down what I have by comparison with other gardeners photos and hopefully some of the expertise here will rub off on me.

I’m really looking forward to having a lovely garden and have been enjoying looking over everyone else’s blogs etc. so with a bit of trial and error I’m hoping to have a garden I can be proud of.

Trial and error are my mantra words at the moment.

Welcome to Goy Fifegarden, if you take your photos and put them on questions they should be answered , I for one enjoy trying to identify plants, and other members do too, also any queries you have

Thank you so much for the welcome! I've just been outside with the camera and managed to take a few snaps before the batteries ran out....and before the drizzle turned into a full-on rain :/

I fear my camera skills are not much better than my gardening skills though.

Anyway, I'm about to upload them now and make a little blog post about them. I'm loving it here so far, I feel like I might actually achieve something and get a better garden by just being here!

I have so many queries. I'm a rank beginner with this and it's all a mystery so I'll appreciate any help I can get with it all. Thanks.

Thank you! I hadn't noticed that section at the bottom. I only joined a few hours ago so it's all still new to me but I'm getting the hang of it :)

Thanks, Seaburngirl. Warning taken :) I only joined about 4 hours ago but haven't left since I found the site. There's so much to take in! I've got my notebook next to me though and I'm writing down all the things I like the look of so I can read up a bit more on them.

And don't forget Google - its a brilliant resource if you have the names of the plants, specially the Latin names...

Google will be my first stop (when I can tear myself from here!). Knowing the names is going to be a massive help and I've picked up a few nice ones to Google from other peoples blogs too.

I seem to have a lot of aqualegia's(sp) which I didn't know the name of until I got here, and I think they're going to be a favourite now that I know what to look for. They're so lovely.

I do so agree about burned dinners, or in my case forgetting to put it in!!

28 May, 2014

Even with the waring I think I've just had my first near miss of a charred dinner... I was so busy checking out all the replies and Googling plants that I barely registered the scent of smoke wafting from the kitchen!

It was close thing but it was salvageable :D

Welcome from me too, Fife. You can very easily get addicted to this site, it's true. There are lots of friendly people with a wealth of expertise between them and, more importantly, a passion for gardening.

Welcome from me too. I'm sure your going to enjoy it. I'm just over the bridge on the other side of the Forth. There are quite a few members here in Scotland. Off now to read your next blog :)

28 May, 2014

Thank you both for the welcome! Everyone is so friendly and helpful.

I'll be stalking your blogs Scottish so that I know what grows well around here :D

Of now to see which ideas I can add to my notebook!

I hope all GOY members have a working smoke alarm with the number of burnt dinners being recorded. Welcome to GOY from me too.

Thank you for the welcome, Andrew :)

To be on the safe side I'm going to have to plan not be anywhere near here between the hours of 4pm and 7pm to be sure of dishing up unburnt dinners.

Oh lord, it's just occurred to me that our Scottish members may soon count as 'foreign' members, depending which way you guys vote... that'll seem really weird...

I know, Bamboo! It's so exciting! :D

Welcome to GoY from me too Fife - I am way down on the South coast of England but enjoy seeing photos of plants from around the world on this very friendly site. You will also find some very knowledgeable folk to answer your gardening questions ... :o)

Thank you Shirley. It _is_ a very friendly site and I'm very lucky to have found it (and all of the lovely members)!

Welcome from me too, you have been warned Fife, all I can say is I hope you get as much enjoyment from here as I always have.

29 May, 2014

Thank you Lincslass. I've only been here a day and had a fortnight's worth of enjoyment yesterday so things bode well :D

Welcome from me to. As the others have said I hope you get as much enjoyment from GoY and your garden as I do. I'm fairly new to gardening and GoY has been a god send. So many knowledgable people who are always willing to help.

As a matter of interest I've recently come across an on TV series by Alan titchmarsh on you tube. It's called how to be a gardener. I've found the two series to be quite informative and a good starting point. If you can't find it give me a shout, I'll send you the link.
