Just began to do a bit of gardening so we know very little, our Daughter is buying us a miniature cherry tree and we are not sure how big it will grow as we have a small garden also the best position to plant it.

Hello fos and welcome. It depends on what kind of tree it is, a fruiting cherry tree or an ornamental cherry. They all like a sunny or partially sunny site, and any normal soil. It is good idea to mix up a handful of bonemeal into the planting hole and keep it very well watered for the first few months.
They can vary in size from about 10/12 feet to about 40ft, so you do need to see the label.
Good luck.
