Basil
Genus: Ocimum.
Species: Ocimum basilicum.
I grow some in containers every year. I prefer it in thai-style cooking to Italian, but the variety I'm currently growing is a lettuce-leaved type bought in Sicily.
Tip I heard about recently: take cuttings, leave in water and they'll sprout roots, for a faster method of propagation than growing from seed. I am trying this out now and after 24 hours I think I can already see the beginnings of tiny hair-like roots at the ends.
