DELPHINIUM
Genus: Delphinium.
Species: Delphinium elatum.
Purchased and planted May 2008. This plant is on the east front side of the house. It prefers full sun or light shade in midafternoon and fertile, well-drained soil with a ph of 5.5-7.0. Spikes of blue, lavender, purple and white flowers appear in early and midsummer. Flowers are superb fresh cut or dried. Delphiniums are heavy feeders, so pay attention to soil pH and fertility. Apply slow-release grandular plant food at time of planting or begin using water soluble plant food 3 weeks after planting. Tall cultivars usually require sturdy staking or may be placed against fences or walls for support. Soon after blooming, delphiniums should be cut back and fed in order to induce a second blooming.
