Gardengnome's Garden
Chrysanthemums
Species: Dendrantthema grandiflorum.
In container garden near back patio area. Potted up June 2007. The soil in th container is well-drained garden soil with compost added. When dividing chumps, take divisions from outside; discard woody centers. Water deeply at intervals determined by your soil structure- frequently in porous soil, less in heavy soils. Too little water cause loss of lower leaves and woody stems.
These sun-loving flowers bloom in summer and fall in all colors except blue, and flowers range from the immense, showy Florists' Chrysanthemum to button-sized. Pinch tips until mid-summjer or when flowering begins. Divide plants in spring, discarding the woody parts. Cut back regularly to promote bloom.
