The red and green kangaroo paw is the floral emblem of its native Western Australia. It has striking red and green flowers which are held on a tall flower stalk that stands around 1m high. The reason for this lengthy stalk is to hold the flowers where they can be easily visited by the birds that pollinate them. In the UK, they are best treated as a greenhouse or conservatory plant. They enjoy a sunny position with good drainage. Be warned that plants are short-lived and often treated as annuals by Australian gardeners. New plants can be raised from seed.
