Species: Orchis spectabilis.
One of my favorite native spring wildflowers, Showy Orchis grows in a small colony in my back woods. It has a pleasant fragrance. This orchid is known to be erratic in its presence in that it may bloom for several years and then disappear or show up some distance away. Many orchids take up to 15 years to mature and produce flowers.
