Miami Mist, Phacelia

Genus: Phacelia.

Species: Phacelia purshii.

I first found a large patch of Miami Mist about 3 miles down the road from me, right along the edge of the road. I researched it and learned that it is a winter annual which means it has to drop seeds in early summer and germinate before winter. I feared that the road crew would mow them all down before they had a chance to drop seed so I transplanted a few to my yard. Now I have several nice colonies growing happily in my yard. Miami Mist is very similar to Friniged Phacelia but Fringed Phacelia is generally smaller with weaker stems and white flowers. It usually begins blooming in my yard in early May. It's a favorite.
