Cornus florida var. rubra 'Cherokee Chief'

Genus: Cornus.

Species: Cornus florida.

The nursery label just said red dogwood but it looks like 'Cherokee Chief'. I have only seen one flower on it so far but this year it has a lot of flower buds set so I should know for certain by Spring. The pink/red flowering varieties are not as hardy as the white flowering so it's possible that the hard winter we've had will kill the flower buds. Another problem is powdery mildew, if it gets bad enough the leaves drop early and it might not set flower buds. I sprayed with Daconil every 2 weeks last summer and it seemed to do the trick.
