Elleme's Garden
Fatsia japonica
Genus: Fatsia.
Species: Fatsia japonica.
I have this in the southwestern corner of my garden. Planted fairly early after I moved here so likely 2000 or 2001 and is about 8ft tall and bushy. Winter 09/10 saw it looking rather miserable after being covered with snow for ages but it perked right up a month later and doesn't seem to have sufffered lasting damage.
Flowers in October. The flowers attract wasps like mature ivy does, which doesn't surprise me since ivy and fatsia can hybridise into fatshedera lizei. Birds don't seem to eat the berries on my one, perhaps there are preferred alternatives nearby (there's a pyracantha that's become like a small tree just a couple of feet away).
