Elleme's Garden

Japanese wineberry

Genus: Rubus.

Species: Rubus phoenicolasius.

Bought from Victoriana autumn 2007. Unlike the whitecurrant we bought at the same time, it was a little pot-bound. Didn't do particularly well in the position I planted it in, so I've just moved it (late summer 2008) to a spot at the back of the garden where the compost bin used to be. It is already looking like it's perked up.

These are reputed to tip-root as easily as any bramble so I'm going to use that to my advantage now while it's relatively small then keep an eye on it when it's as big as I want it to be.

Canes should be pruned out after fruiting, leaving the younger ones to grow on for next year.
