Clearing your allotment area will be challenging, but I'm sure you'll have great results once you're able to start growing veg etc.

Been there, done that! We took on a neglected plot (in West Sussex) in a very hot, dry Summer and found the only way to clear the Docks, Nettles, Bindweed etc. was to dig over methodically, definitely used no weedkiller. Yes, it was hard work, but worth it when the many fruits and vegetables were harvested.
We divided the plot into areas which we edged with old decking boards, not raised beds, just separate ones and made paths between with shredded plant material from a tree surgeon.
If possible, ask fellow allotment holders on site if they knew what was grown on there before as this will give you an idea of how to rotate crops. Good luck!

Good to know allotments are still around in some areas. Know of one or two that are being taken over by developers. (Thought allotments were protected?)
Don't forget to let us know how you are getting along.

Great stuff - more power to your elbow!
When I acquired a neglected one I covered half of it (the rosbay willowherb and thistles half) with sheets of tough black plastic that a farmer friend gave me - the sort they wrap silage rolls in. After a year all the weeds had gone. YOu could use old carpet either. There was plenty to do digging the other half in the meantime! Maye even bindweed might get a bit discouraged with this treatment.
