By Elke

Black-eyed Susans - Rudbeckia hirta (Rudbeckia hirta (Black-eyed Susan))

The roots are used for medicinal purposes. "Root wash is an astringent for sores, snakebites and swelling" ref. http://www.bio.brandeis.edu/fieldbio/Survival_Gold_Uygur/Pages/Black-EyedSusan.html There's even a variety listed on GoY as 'Rudbeckia hirta Toto' ! That'll make him smile.

I had a beautiful brown one last year, Elke...Didn't know where it came from..no sign of it this year....sniff...

That's interesting NN - never seen a brown one, although some of ours are quite dark red and yellow - perhaps it will return next year. Some come out later than others, too. There's hope yet!

I can well understand them naming one after me. It must be a beautiful flower just like yours.
