It should have orange flowers but I'm pretty sure this plant is blind.

I have tried several times to grow these and it never happens.. they start off ok then the leaves turn yellow ......dont know why...

In mine I found some red insect looking a bit like ladybirds but without the spots on them and the bodies were more oval the round, I don't know what were they but I supposed they were eating my fritillaria so I killed them.
I feed them with comfrey liquid to to help them to grow stronger.

that sounds like the lily beetle, best thing for them is exactly what you did squish em

Make sure you get their poo-covered larvae too! They do the most damage.

Thanx Moonkins, I googled for lily beetles and I recognised them from the pix.
