This is a native tree found in the drier areas of northern Australia and is what we call a 'bush tucker' tree - the seeds inside its fruit pods are edible. This is the tree out in our courtyard where it provides much needed shade during summer.

Rhodea - we let the birds harvest the fruit on this one. I have never tried to taste test the seeds - but I know the birds love them.

Good one Richard - I'll have a scotch and dry with ice with my peanuts thanks!

Cheers! I'll have one with you as well then Bernieh - but make mine a double!. We can have a party under the tree and invite some friends to 'bring a bottle' and some tucker with them.

What type of birds eat that?
19 Aug, 2009
Rhodea - it's mostly the fig birds that love the seeds on the peanut tree. They obviously have diverse tastes.

Do you have a picture of a fig bird?I've never heard of them before.

Yes Rhodea - if you go to my 'Garden' tab on my homepge you will see a section called 'Garden Birds' and you will find a photo of the Fig Bird there. You will find 2 photos on the 12th row - the female and the male.

Thanks Rhodea - we're so lucky that we get to see such a variety of birdlife in this spot. I've been learning lots about the different breeds.

Need one of these in the back garden Bernieh, maybe then the Squizza's would leave the bird table alone ! lol

Might be just the solution!

Mind you with the amount of peanuts they bury, if I leave one alone it might grow into this !!!!!! lol
