Children's garden allotments

Children's garden allotments

The Children's garden allotments were constructed in 2006 and only became into full use a year later, There are 16 of them. All 7 x 6ft sq. The idea was that children could come along, accompanied by an adult to create their own garden and learn about plants at an early stage and get their hands dirty. Which reminds me of the two children, brother and sister, both totally blind, who, when working on their little gardens ask if their hands are dirty yet.

Do they keep coming in to look after their gardens, or do other children make new gardens in the sites?

Hi spritzhenry, most of the children come along regularly say once a month during the summer and a couple of times in the winter and some come maybe two or three times a week. I will only take a garden back if I have not seen the child for four or five months.

Just related to my other half your story of the two blind children who wanted to know if their hands were dirty yet. So funny, yet so touching. These mini gardens are a wonderful idea - where did your inspiration come from, was it a love of gardening when you were a child?

Hello LittleLarford, I don't know about inspiration, sometimes it gets the better of me, I don't think that I will ever get my ideas compleated in my lifetime. The love of gardening and growing possibly came from my ancesters, http://www.reg-garden.com/about_reg.htm .. The family had always been involved with the land.
This evening it was confirmed that the Christmas tree lights in the garden would be switched on around 6pm ish on Tuesday the 13th November by the St Brelade Brownies and Scouts. They are having a bit of a private do, a sing song I think in the theatre / amphitheatre, That evening the local Brownies will be presenting the BBC Children in Need with a check with funds that I had been donated during the year. By the way, I have a fairly good memory when it comes to talking about work in the garden. Just for example, when I constructed the mini gardens I cut and sand-papered 700 pieces of batten and I used 2000 screws and painted the lot twice. That must have been a work of love as nobody in their right sense of mind would have done that, ha ha.

I will try and keep them going, not easy as I have to weed some of them when the kids forget to come. One of the gardens is being worked on by a mother and her two children. One of the children told me that the reason for them coming to my mini gardens was that their father would not let any of them do any work in the (his) garden at home. Sounds mean don't you think? ... Reg.
