Herb Garden

My favorite lettuce is the one with the red spots on the leaves. It's a romaine and it's called " Freckles "

Oh! Looks delish. Did you grow it from seed? We love romaine. I'd like to try it.

I prefer to grow lettuces from packs also, maybe because in the US birds and animals take a lot of seeds and seedlings. My problem here is that the one major chain of garden centers in this area has gone out of business, so we are left with Wal-Mart and Home Depot, and their selection is very slim. Do you know of any other firms that might sell to the public that would have a good selection of different var?

Too bad the place closed Wohlibuli. No other nuseries in your area ? Of course now one thinks twice about running around for a six pac of lettecuce because of the gas prices. I had a lot of fun doing sedes this year and I'm thinking very seriously of starting lettuce and other veggies from seed next year. Maybe if you allowed the seedlings to get to a good size before you plant them would prevent animals from getting them. I've been thinking about a greenhouse but everything that I would like is not in my budget. I've also thought about building a cold frame out of old wooden windows. I think that something like that would work well.

I am seriously considering a cold frame for this winter. I guess I won't have much of a choice for some things, it's either that or drive 30 miles to downtown Atlanta, or 40 miles to the Univ of Georgia , when they have their sales. Starting from seeds may be my only choice.

I'm thinking that with a cold frame or a greenhouse that would mean that i could get them out sooner. I have plenty of room in my basement to set up an area with lights to start seeds. I had good luck with what i started for the most part this year so I'm seeing the satisfaction you get from starting plants yourself.
