acer palmatum 'bloodgood'

I had this in the woodland bed during 2007, and the start of 2008, but something strange happened to it, it shot up really quickly a single week looking stem, but with lots of big jucey leaves, to about 5ft high, then the whole lot shrivedled and died, i pruned it right back, but eventually lost it.
