Hi Sanbaz - depends what you think is 'big' lol M stellata is in fact one of the smallest magnolias. This one in my garden is getting on for 7 or 8 ft tall - but it is nearly 30 years old. They tend towards going sideways rather than upwards and do not respond well to pruning (when they tend to send shoots out in all directions and the shape is ruined). They are well worth making space for :-) and are ok with a bit of shade - this one is on the north-facing side of my garden.

Hi Sid, this is lovely. I've had mine for about 4 years now and its still quite small, it flowers well but doesnt seem to get any bigger - are they slow to get going or do you think it needs moving. Mine faces east and does not have much protection from the wind.

I think they are just slow growing Dawn. Dont move it - they don't like root disturbance and the shock could kill it. A little protection from the wind might help - it would protect the flowers too - could you plant some other shrubs around it to give it protection?

Hello Sid, thanks for the advice. I will look at setting some shrubs near it for protection :-)
