Hyophorbe verschaffeltii - Spindle Palms

Hyophorbe verschaffeltii - Spindle Palms (Hyophorbe verschaffeltii - Spindle Palms)

These Spindle palms are growing happily in Point Loma, San Diego, CA. This palm is ever so slightly hardier than Hyophorbe langenicaulis - Bottle Palm. A huge cycad in the background also. Photo taken March 24, 2010.

It's great...isn't it? This palm is not too commonly grown here...along with Bottle Palm it prefers South Florida and Hawaii's tropical climate better.

Dottydaisy2:

Thanks! Yes, this palm is such a beauty! I've seen some nice specimens around town but, I wish it was more widely grown.

This palm will grow about another 10 feet/ 3.3 meters taller in time.

I have never seen any of the palms offered for sale over here......

Dottydaisy2:

Some palms are not very commonly sold in cooler temperate zones...even for houseplants.

We're lucky here in Southern California because we have many large palm nurseries and a huge Palm Society membership. Many of the unusual palms are available here.

Thats another I've thought of giving a try. What do you think?

Very tropical. I had one on the porch all year in the Bay Area for a couple of years before I moved here. It tends to get a lot of black cold spots on the fronds even in temps in the 50's (it hates protracted cool temps).
