He hasn,t decided yet Wohlibuli , but it will be vegetables , he has been reading an artical on how much easier it is to hoe round etc . as you don,t have to stand on the soil compacting it down , he has now made a second bed , we will see how it goes next year , it,s to late for this year

Yes I suppose it is. Maybe he could try some cold hardy greens like Kale or Spinach. I think I will try them this year and see how they do. These are very much like the beds I use in my Sq. Ft. garden patio boxes.

thats a thought ,I will pass that on . I,ve looked at your boxes and they are similar aren,t they , do you find them better than the conventional groundwork , and do you think the produce is any better for it .

The reason we made these boxes was because I can not garden in the conventional way anymore. I have osteoarthritis in my knees and after a dislocation I just couldn't do it. With these boxes I can sit on a lowish chair and work easily. The soil here is very heavy clay, and my hubby read about square foot gardening and we decided to give it a try. We made up our own mix for soil and the results were great, and the daily maintenance was very easy. I was amazed at the quality and amount of produce we had. Last year we had a small 3x3 ft box and over the winter he made me another 28 square feet of growing space. If you would like to read about square foot gardening get a copy of the book by Mel Bartholomew. But get the 2005 addition.

Sorry to hear you suffer from Osteo.thats awful, it looks as if you do a very good job in the garden ,you are a credit to it
Thanks for the info. about the book . it sounds as though you have got it right and lots more produce to ,can,t be bad .
I have a back problem so it would help me to .
