It's a quince and grows to a large thorny shrub. Very tough and can be pruned ad lib.

doubt i have been too nice to them ~ they have had some feed but im not sure what they like really.
ive heard them say on gardeners question time that if a plant has lots of leaves and no flowers its cos they have been treated too well

Yes, the plant's reaction to stress is to flower profusely and try to set seeds before it dies.....so they say! Chaenomeles is not fussy about soil type, so perhaps you just have a poor specimen. That's really annoying. Having said that, my white one has only flowered for the first time this year and I've had it for three years, so be patient if they are young plants.
