My Acalypha is growing pretty well in this spot. It grows fast and has bright leaves. Photo taken Feb. 26, 2016.

This is my small plant. My largest one is about 15' tall and has much larger leaves.

I grew three varieties of Acalypha in Mission Jose, Fremont. They grew very well there. In winter they do loose many of their leaves, though. It's a very tropical plant. It does grow very fast.
My Croston 'Mammy' has grown very fast with all the water I've been giving it. I transplanted it into a 15 gallon container a few days ago. It was so root-bound already, I just transplanted a few months ago into the 10 gallon pot.

Marriedtoplants blog's Len Geiger has been trying various Crotons in the San Diego area. Stoplight and Mammy so far seem to be hardiest..and the other one you have with fiddle shaped leaves. All I read are among the oldest Croton cultivars.
I was at HD..in a croton mood. Wouldnt you know? Didnt have even one.

How do bottle palms do for you? I see them for sale now. Last I tried,It just rotted in December. I think it was overwatered at the wrong time of year. BUT, I wonder if it makes any difference? too tender?

I think there's several crotons which can easily be grown here in San Diego. They do need regular water...if not they droop and can die or loose many leaves.
I've seen really nice bottle palms in the ground here. Supposedly (according to many people in the Palm Society) San Diego has the best climate for growing bottle palms outdoor. For some reason they don't even survive in Orange and Los Angeles Counties. Bottle palm is a very tender palm. There's many in Miami, Florida.
I used to see many bottle palms for sale at Lowe's here in San Diego.
