They're pretty drought tolerant but I'm not sure if that means that they're SoCal drought tolerant!

Yes, we take drought tolerance to a whole new level here.
If we had the so called "droughts" you get in the UK. We would be happy! Remember: our dry season is very long, typically April through most of November or longer...and our droughts last for years. Our normal rainfall is very low, also...only 9 inches (228 mm) per year. We've only been getting about 50 to 60 percent of normal rainfall for several years.

Yes, the drought has been at historic extreme levels in southern California. So many trees (millions) are dying from this extreme drought! It's very sad because I've lost so many plants! :>((
