A fantastic Aloe. We find it a little temperamental but it's a lovely plant.

Thank you, never had any problems with this one, in what way do you find it temperamental?

We have had problems with the roots rotting off even with good drainage and careful watering.

Thats interesting, I was told by the grower at Trewiden that A. polyphylla could be given more water than most other Aloes and have always treated them accordingly with no root problems to the present, when I was there hers were standing in a saucer with water in it!!! she also told me they were tolerent of some frost something else I haven't tested out :o)))

You may be right P; we have 4 plants so I am going to try again with a different compost and more water. I did see a stand at Hampton Court RHS show, and they grew them in a basic multi-purpose compost with added perlite.

Mine are in apx. 60% multy-purpose, 20% JI.num.2 and 20% very fine sharp grit. I Water them in summer as soon as they are near dry and in winter watering them as soon as they dry out completely, if the weather is bad I will wait for a break in the weather and do it then. I am interested in how you get on, please keep me posted. :-)

How is this plant doing please, have just bought one, and looking on the net I see they are quite picky?

I was told that too but mine has been fine so far, i reduce the watering a bit this time of year but they do need a bit more than most Aloes. They are also quite cold resistant, hope yous grows well :o)

22 Oct, 2012
Really, I was told you can grow them outside......oh dear another one to bring in!!
23 Oct, 2012
I wouldn't risk it outside especially how cold the last 2 have been.
