Aquilegia sp.

Sid

By Sid

Aquilegia sp. (Aquilegia 'McKenna Hybrids')

This almost ended up on the compost heap. It sprung up in the veggie patch. When I was clearing the patch for spring I decided that rather than throw away the self-sown Aquilegias I'd pot them up and take them to a carboot instead. Glad I did with this one - the flowers are huge on it! It's still going tho lol

Thanks folks.

Ang - this one self-seeded itself in my veggie patch lol I've got lots of Aquilegias. This is a good one, but I've no space for it so it's going to a carboot so someone else can enjoy it :-) They don't come very true from seed, so it's a bit hit n miss getting the colours you want - if you want some seeds I can send you some, but no idea what colours you'll get!

What a lovely colour.
I too have them sprouting up all over the place here at the lockside. One of the good things with the flooding we get, I often get some beautiful flowers appear.

Good luck Lemondog - they flower in the 2nd year after sowing and like a little bit of dappled shade (but I've got a few in full sun that do well and have been there years). You can buy a seed mix called 'McKanna Giants Mixed', which contains this colour combo as well as some really pretty 'others' plus they have extra-big flowers. It's a really good mix to go for. :-)
