Hello Amy, OK I'll put you down for a pergola too, lol.
I should have taken a closer photo really. Yes, it usually gets to this height, probably about 10 feet high. Its stems are like bamboo, they go brown in the autumn and I usually leave them over winter and cut down to ground level in early Spring and the growing starts all over again. Its not that wet where it is actually but we've seen them growing on a river bed in Spain, you've probably seen them growing in France too.

It looks very much like the Elephant grass , Miscanthus .. that I have Dawn , I use the canes from that in the garden ......we cut ours down in the spring as well ... x

Dawn it looks lovely.
16 Aug, 2009
Thanks Carol. Its much nicer close up. I'll get another pic.
Amy: I think I'll save some canes this year too.

Great plant Dawn and as you leave the stems on I bet you get lots of insects over wintering inside too !
16 Aug, 2009
Whooo, never thought of that BB, I like the idea of the insects benefitting :-)
Funny thing was, we paid about 15 quid for this about 8 years ago and when we were in Spain, there it was, growing wild, felt a bit ripped off at the time.
16 Aug, 2009
Yes but donyt forget you probably wouldnt have been able to take it out of the wild Dawn ! Anyway, bet it was smaller than this when you bought it!
When we buy plants usually buy small as the difference in price for a couple of seasons growth is ridiculous !

Very true BB. I was able to split it this Spring and I've moved some to a boggy area near the pond and its growing OK. Its a tough old thing, the roots can lift slabs.

Maybe the variegated variety is less vigorous Dotty. i do like it though, very similar to bamboo.
21 May, 2010
Dawn you are so lucky to have so much space to grow all these fantastic plants, I would be in my element........sigh!!
21 May, 2010
I do like the big perennials and I love the space Dotty but there is always so much to do, sigh but what gorgeous weather, I was working until dusk, super.
