My Dwarf Fijian Fern is growing well under the shade structure in the front yard. I had this fern in the ground in three different locations over the years, however, it would always get sun burned until I moved it into the shade. Photo taken Sept. 23, 2011.

Alexandramou:
You need to plant the extremely fast growing Tipuana tipu (Tipu tree). It's a very widely grown super fast growing tree here. It can grow 8ft/2.3m or more in one year. This Brazilian native tree should be perfectly hardy in your climate.

Thanks! This fern is very cheap and grow very well with water and shade here in San Diego.

Thanks Delonix,
Those are the exact words I wanted to read...."Perfectly hardy in your climate".....I think they are gorgeous.

Yes, it's hardy and revels in heat!
Do you see many growing where you live?

I haven't noticed any, maybe on another part of the island.
Sending you PM.

That's very surprising! Tipuana tipu is very hardy, even though it's native to subtropical Brazil. I've read mature trees have survived brief temps down to 18ºF/-7.7ºC. It looses its leaves at a much higher temp, though.

It's getting ready to put out many fronds right now. I let it dry out and it's not looking its best now. However, I gave it tons of rainwater (which I have in barrels) today. Soon I will take new photos when the new fronds emerge.
I've had this fern for more than 8 years now. It's the longest I've ever had one...in the past they've always died from drying out. They will die from being dried out, even for a very short period of time.

do you have irrigation in your garden?
looking forward to seeing the pictures of the new fronds emerging.

The fronds grow quickly. In the next couple of weeks I should be able to take photos of the new fronds.
I water all the plants by hand. It's a lot of work...but, I can control the water better. In winter I use my captured rain water. I use the rain water in summer; however, more sparingly, because we don't receive any rain for many moths (usually for 8 or 9 months).

i hate to admit this but 2012 possibly had 8 or 9 dry days!!
[actually it was a bit better than that due to march being good but not much better] apart from the outer hebrides who had 2 or 3 months of no rain ~ the bogs were drying out!

I did hear from a lot of GoY members in the UK that most areas received record amounts of rain last summer.
I can't relate...because we need more rain here in San Diego. We're behind on the normal rainfall rates this season.
Are the outer Hebrides far from you?

far too far delonix, i would live there if i could; they are open to the Atlantic and very windy, few trees can grow.
According to google it takes me 11 and a half hours by car and ferry but that would be without stops!

It's quite a distance from you.

We are in the middle of England nearly and the islands are the far north west of Scotland.

Really nice. I'm thinking about buying a Tree fern but I have to wait until I have some shade in my garden. I need my trees to grow fast...
