Caryota gigas - Giant Fishtail Palm

Caryota gigas - Giant Fishtail Palm (Caryota gigas - Giant Fishtail Palm)

This massive 65' tall Giant Fishtail palm is growing at my friend's house in the Oakland Hills (San Francisco Bay Area). It was very difficult to get the whole giant tree into the photo. It's the largest Fishtail Palm I've ever seen growing in Northern California. Photo taken Feb. 21, 2020.

I think because of the cooler summers..then dont bolt to flowering like they do in most of soucal. You need to post that on the palm board Andy..anything that tall might be largest in state. So many people in hotter drier climates down south said after 7 or 8 years, they died.

No, the one at the San Diego was around 75' tall. Also, the ones at Huntington are absolutely massive! This ones could be one of the largest in Northern California, though.

I've never heard of them dying after 7 or 8 years. I heard after 20 years or so, though. The ones at the Oakland Palmetum flowered after 15 years. Some palm experts said it could've been due to the 1990 freeze.
