They were about from 5 - 8 feet or 1.5 - 2.3 meters tall.

I had one when I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area...it was 8 feet/ 2.4 meters tall and was beautiful. I started it from a very tiny cutting less than 1 inch/ 2.5 cm long. It grew to 8 feet within one year.

Does it originate in China? I was wondering about hardiness.

That species is supposed to grow in Phoenix, also, but I've never seen it here, and the none of the growers I know have heard of it. Funny how some plants just seem to drop down a black hole!

The U.S.D.A hardiness zones are over-rated! It's very difficult to formulate a hardiness zone map....there's too many micro-climate within these zones.

Most of San Diego is zoned as: USDA 10B to 11 , however, there's some small canyons that fall into zone 10A or 9B.

In my opinion C. philippinum would be a very difficult plant to grow in Phoenix, AZ...they like it much cooler and more humidity.

Well, that could account for it then. I have seen occasional C. bungei--including an office atrium that was overrun with it--and most of what I've read indicates that C. philippinum is similar. Apparently not as similar as some think, including the WGB!

C. philippinum likes it warm to hot...however, in Phoenix, AZ where Tugbrethil lives the normal high temp is 112 degrees F. / 45 and the low temps rarely go below 90 degrees F. / 33 degrees C. all summer. It's an excessively hot summer desert climate. Many times in summer the temps can get up to 118 degrees F. / 47 degrees C...which can burn plants to death.

Ah, good! I can rule that one out then!

C. philippinum likes it warm to hot, but I've seen it growing happily and naturalizing in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA. (where it's cool and overcast most of the time and only gets down to freezing once or maybe twice in a decade)
