Clerodendrum philippinum - Chinese Glory Bower

Clerodendrum philippinum - Chinese Glory Bower (Clerodendrum philippinum - Chinese Glory Bower)

This area of the San Diego Zoo had hundreds of these plants spreading all around. It has a very sweet fragrant flowers which resemble little roses. I love this plants and had one once...however, will not grow one again because the of the millions of ants which love the flowers also. Photo taken August 24, 2010. Caution: this plant can be extremely invasive in the ground!

How large is this Delonix?
And please stop posting photos of Clerodendrum - I'm reaching for my wallet already!

Meanie:

LOL! That's funny! : > )

They were about from 5 - 8 feet or 1.5 - 2.3 meters tall.

I had one when I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area...it was 8 feet/ 2.4 meters tall and was beautiful. I started it from a very tiny cutting less than 1 inch/ 2.5 cm long. It grew to 8 feet within one year.

Does it originate in China? I was wondering about hardiness.

That species is supposed to grow in Phoenix, also, but I've never seen it here, and the none of the growers I know have heard of it. Funny how some plants just seem to drop down a black hole!

Thanks Delonix.
I must get to grips with the US hardiness zones!

Meanie:

The U.S.D.A hardiness zones are over-rated! It's very difficult to formulate a hardiness zone map....there's too many micro-climate within these zones.

Most of San Diego is zoned as: USDA 10B to 11 , however, there's some small canyons that fall into zone 10A or 9B.

Tugbrethil:

In my opinion C. philippinum would be a very difficult plant to grow in Phoenix, AZ...they like it much cooler and more humidity.

Sounds like the UK this summer!!!!

26 Aug, 2010

Well, that could account for it then. I have seen occasional C. bungei--including an office atrium that was overrun with it--and most of what I've read indicates that C. philippinum is similar. Apparently not as similar as some think, including the WGB!

Meanie:

C. philippinum likes it warm to hot...however, in Phoenix, AZ where Tugbrethil lives the normal high temp is 112 degrees F. / 45 and the low temps rarely go below 90 degrees F. / 33 degrees C. all summer. It's an excessively hot summer desert climate. Many times in summer the temps can get up to 118 degrees F. / 47 degrees C...which can burn plants to death.

Ah, good! I can rule that one out then!

Meanie:

C. philippinum likes it warm to hot, but I've seen it growing happily and naturalizing in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA. (where it's cool and overcast most of the time and only gets down to freezing once or maybe twice in a decade)
