Colchicum luteum - 2014

By Andrewr

Colchicum luteum - 2014 (Colchicum luteum)

Very early flowering bulb (usually in February), only three inches in height. For gritty, well-drained soil in full sun. Needs to be kept dry when dormant, and prone to botrytis in our damp climate. Best grown in an alpine house or in a pot under glass

Beautiful colour Andrew. We've had a few snowdrops flowering and the ordinary bulbs are just showing through the soil.

Where are you growing this Andrew?

DD - outside! I've got a new raised bed for small bulbs, with the same soil conditions as my alpine bed. This was planted in the autumn, but will be a challenge to keep going. So I thought I'd post a photo in its first year (not something I would normally do), in case I never see it again

Spritz
will show you some more different ones in a few weeks. but not yellow.

Spritz - this is one we ought to have seen on my first trip to Kazakhstan. The day we should have seen it was cold and with torrential rain. Our group of five set out with good intentions, but after two hours without seeing a single new plant, two of us decided to turn back as we were soaked to the skin and very cold. I think the others did finally find one in flower, but that was the only thing they saw during the entire day.
As far as I know, this is the only yellow colchicum, and is difficult to grow (I didn't find that out until I had ordered it), which is why I am so chuffed to get it into flower, if only once

Well done you! Thanks, Brian, I shall look with interest. :-)
