In New Zealand, we know this plant by its Maori name of Toi Toi, & it grows wild along the side of rural roads, sometimes reaching quite tall. This looks like an identical but more civilised twin, more suitable for the average garden. We also get a wild variety which has a pinkish or purplish/mauve tinge to the pluming.
