Daphne circassica

Daphne circassica (Daphne circassica)

One of the more unique and harder to find daphnes in my collection. Even though this is still a very small plant I can smell it from several feet away

Beautiful. I have no daphne in my garden and as I rememebr, we can hardly find some in the GCs. Why are they so precious? What do you think? Are they hard to grow or what?

They have a reputation for being short-lived and difficult to grow. They are probably best known for suddenly dying without warning. One day they look perfectly healthy and the next day they might be dead. They are fussy about cultural requirements, they need sharp drainage and just the right amount of watering. Not many wholesale growers bother with them because they are so demanding with cultural requirements. Since they are hard to find and keep alive for a long time, that's part of what makes them precious. They are probably the most fragrant flowering shrub, many of them blossom several times a growing season and some flower in winter. I don't think they are terribly difficult to grow, they are actually pretty straight forward if you give them what they need. Some varieties are harder than others, I've always had trouble keeping 'Brigg's Moonlight' alive for long but it is so pretty that I will probably keep trying haha.

I was just looking for some daphnes and they are even difficult to find through mail-order nurseries! For Daphne circassica, I can only find 3-4 US nurseries that sell it through mail-order!
