Dendrobium kingianum - Rock Orchid

Dendrobium kingianum - Rock Orchid (Dendrobium kingianum - Rock Orchid)

My Rock orchid has developed many seed pods for the first time ever. The seed pods look like a berry. Photo taken Apr. 8, 2014.

Will you be trying to germinate them? It's something of a science isn't it?

Meanie:

No, I will not try to germinate them. I think it's too much work.

What amazes me is how different the seed pods are compared to Epidendrum orchids seed pods. The D. kingianum pods are like berries all over the plant.

I'm going to see what happens to the berries when they get old.

Got to be worth dropping a few (thousand probably - I think they're small) seeds into the pot and seeing if nature takes its course.

I'll maybe try it out. I know the seeds on Epidendrum, which have a seed-pod like a balloon (because they're mostly hallow), have thousands of seeds. None have ever germinated from seeds naturally spread throughout the yard.

I know of someone in Santee, which had hundreds of Dendrobium seedlings pop up after 3 years after seeds were distributed naturally by the orchids. I guess it sometimes takes a long time. I was so surprised it happened in Santee because it's much hotter there than where I live even though it's only about a 25 minute drive east.
